Most of the time I tried to move around with trains and busses, but a couple of time I ended up far away from any public transportation and tried to stop cars. Every time it was rather easy and quick to get a ride, so this is not a bad option. You might want to point with your index finger in the direction, where you want to go rather than holding up your thumb; this seems to be the standard gesture in Japan. Be prepared for many curious questions!
