Arashima-take (荒島岳) (1524m)

Arashima
Comment: The most difficult part of this excursion is buying a train ticket. The name of the destination is Kadohara. However, this does not seem to be the standard pronounciation of the Kanji, rather people who do not know the place will read Katsuhara. In addition, this is a very small village in a remote place on a very local train line that ends soon after passing there. I have bought tickets there twice, and both times JR staff suggested to me that maybe I wanted to go someplace else. It took quite some negotiations to get my tickets. Carrying a map, a timetable, and telling them that you want to change in Fukui will help.
How to get there: Go with the Thunderbird between Osaka and Toyama to Fukui. There change to a local train to Kadohara/Katsuhara (see comment above). This local train's platform might only be the very South end of the main platform and be a bit hard to find.
Telegraphic Description:
From the train station, take the road to the ski piste. Walk up to the top of the chairlift and find a track continuing just behind it.
Remarks:
If you have to wait for the infrequent trains in Kadohara, there is a cafe. However, it does not seem to be open very regularly. But they will open if they notice you thirstily scratching on the door. at least they did so for us.
Map:
Yamachizu's Haku-san map has a small map of the area on its backside.
